This is the last course of a sequence of three quarters designed for college’s students with an intermediate level of proficiency in Spanish. Spanish121 endeavors to use the basic skills students learned in Spanish101, 115 ,and/or high school at a higher level of intercultural communicative competence, and provides students with a more advanced foundation in the skills of speaking, listening, reading, writing, and appreciating culture. The course emphasizes the functional use of Spanish language, with a special focus on interaction and communication.

CRISOL DE CULTURAS EN LA GASTRONOMÍA HISPANA

This course introduces students to interdisciplinary readings, lectures, films and discussions that will lead them to examine the intimate connection between food and identity. In this course, identity and traditions surrounding food will be shown as representing powerful symbols of social and cultural meanings. Participating in the course will enhance critical thinking: students will come to differentiate how choices and traditions surrounding food can be understood as expressions of singularity, subjectivity, and solidarity. Moreover, students will learn how food marks boundaries between different group of humans, tradition and innovation, and other such dichotomies.

Movies as Mentors: A Guiding Light into Latino American Culture
The fundamental purpose of this course is the expanding of our students' horizons --especially through visual and story content. These films will help the students in the class to learn about events in specific cultures, which have contributed to the panorama of the Latin-American’s world community. the films will also teach students about the daily life of their protagonists with respect to food and meals, family and community traditions, the raising and education of children, etc. Such information provides the means for the student to grow in mindfulness of the quotidian lives of other peoples, as well as offering enjoyment to the whole class through sharing the viewing of much that is beautiful, uplifting, and thought provoking.
